My best guess based on the paper attached to the lid of the box is that it at one point carried a steam engine indicator which was used by mechanics to diagnose and repair engine issues. The reference to the “new style Tabor indicator” which came into production in the 1880s makes me think this box was made at some point in the late 19th century.
