This beautiful pedestal bowl was likely used in hotel service at a resort in the spa town of Sliač, Slovakia. Interestingly, it bears the stamp “Štátne Kúpele” which translates in English to “State Spa” or “National Spa” - meaning this piece was likely produced (or, if produced earlier, then used) during the Cold War when Czechoslovakia was under Communist rule.
In more pleasant history, though, Slovakia has many spa towns across the country that have for centuries been known for their healing mineral waters and natural beauty. My in-laws still enjoy visiting their favorite spa towns during visits home to Slovakia.
Interestingly, the stamp on the bottom of this piece indicates another location in Slovakia, Štrbské Pleso, which is a ski resort town in the High Tatras mountain range. Perhaps this pedestal bowl has been used to serve hotel guests at a variety of altitudes!
